Sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS)
Classification :
PRODUCT DETAILS
Sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS)is an anionic surfactant, also known as sodium lauryl sulfate, with the chemical formula C12H25SO4Na and a molecular weight of 288.38. It is typically a white or pale yellow powder with a slight odor and a lubricating feel. Its melting point is 185–190°C, and its density is 1.11 g/cm³. It is readily soluble in water to form a transparent solution, slightly soluble in alcohol, and insoluble in chloroform and ether. It is flammable when exposed to open flames or high temperatures, and decomposes upon heating, releasing hydrocarbons and sulfur dioxide gases. It reacts with cationic surfactants, lead salts, and potassium salts to form precipitates. In aqueous solution, it hydrolyzes to form alcohol and sodium bisulfate.
Sodium lauryl sulfate can be produced by reacting dodecyl alcohol with chlorosulfonic acid under sulfuric acid catalysis to produce mono-lactyl sulfate, followed by neutralization with sodium hydroxide, bleaching, precipitation, and spray drying. Sodium dodecyl sulfate has a wide range of applications, including as an anionic surfactant in detergents, a foaming agent in toothpaste, a leveling agent in the printing and dyeing industry, a fire extinguishing agent in mines, and an industrial auxiliary. It can also be used as a surface desensitizer and dispersant for ammonium perchlorate, and as a mineral flotation agent, for example, in the flotation of sodium nitrate, sodium sulfate, potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, fluorite, barite, phosphates, pyrochlore, goethite, wolframite, cassiterite, etc.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate is a low-toxicity compound. Accidental ingestion can cause sore throat, mouth ulcers, cough, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Contact can cause redness of the skin and eyes, and in severe cases, even corrosion of the skin and damage to the eyes.
Physicochemical Properties
Density: 1.03 g/cm³
Melting Point: 206-207℃
Appearance: White or pale yellow powder
Solubility: Easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, almost insoluble in chloroform, ether, and light petroleum
Applications
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SLS) possesses excellent emulsifying, foaming, and water-soluble properties. It is biodegradable, alkali-resistant, hard water-resistant, and exhibits stability in aqueous solutions across a wide pH range. Furthermore, its ease of synthesis and low cost have led to its widespread use in cosmetics, detergents, textiles, papermaking, lubricants, pharmaceuticals, building materials, chemicals, and oil extraction industries. It can also be applied to fundamental research on the properties of positive and negative ionic surfactant complexes, micellar catalysis, and ordered molecular aggregates.
