Pigment Yellow 74 is a monoazo organic pigment, chemically named 2-[(2-methoxy-4-nitrophenyl)azo]-N-(2-methoxyphenyl)-3-oxobutyramide, CAS number 6358-31-2, molecular formula C18H18N4O6, and molecular weight 386.36. Its density is 1.33 g/cm³, melting point 293℃, boiling point 577.2℃ (760 mmHg), flash point 302.9℃, and water solubility is less than 0.1 g/100 mL (20℃). It has a bright yellow or greenish-yellow hue and belongs to the monoazo yellow product series, possessing vibrant color and high tinting strength.
Application Areas
This pigment is mainly used in printing inks (offset and gravure) and the coatings industry. Its tinting strength is higher than similar monoazo yellow pigments, and it exhibits good acid, alkali, and saponification resistance. Its lightfastness is 2-3 grades higher than diazo yellow. Modification by introducing a second diazo coupling component containing sulfonic acid groups can improve its dispersion stability and tinting strength in water-based systems (up to 128.4%). The preparation process involves diazotization with o-methoxyacetylacetanilide, and particle morphology is optimized through rosin soap precipitation. The improved product has higher lightfastness and hiding power, making it suitable for self-drying paints and water-based exterior wall coatings. Pigment Yellow 74 is mainly used in water-based coatings, industrial paints, automotive paints, powder coatings, and air-drying paints in the coatings industry. Large particle size, high hiding power formulations (such as Permanent Yellow OP-180, specific surface area 10-20 m²/g) exhibit high hiding power, especially suitable for air-drying varnishes in the coatings industry. In air-drying varnishes, the hiding power can be further improved by increasing the concentration without altering the rheological properties.
Pigment Yellow 74 is an important variety used in inks, suitable for offset and gravure inks, especially widely used in water-based inks, including water-based inks, corrugated inks, and inkjet inks. High transparency, fine particle size formulations (such as Permanent Yellow 5GX, YHY7403) are even more suitable for water-based inks.
Pigment Yellow 74 is used for coloring plastic and rubber products. It is also used in economical halogen-free environmentally friendly plastic paints and metal baking paints.
Pigment Yellow 74 can also be used in coating printing pastes, stationery, and leather coloring.
Pigment Yellow 74 has various formulations and 126 grades. High hiding power, large particle size formulations (such as YHY7402) are mainly for coatings; high transparency, fine particle size formulations (such as YHY7403) are mainly for water-based inks. Different formulations also differ in color (red/green hue), lightfastness, and vividness.
